The process
The technical definition for sheet metal forming performed on a spinning lathe is flu forming. Basically it means to progressively form a sheet metal blank against the tooling by means of a roll-tool. The form –this is the nickname for the tooling- being installed on the spindle of the lathe and the roll-tool on the carriage, the finished part is obtained in several steps and a controlled reduction of the material thickness. The next way of spinning is the so called flu projection, the forming of the blank being done in one step only. This technique leads to a dramatic thickness reduction on the walls of the item but almost no reduction on the bottom. campioni_2web

Typical production applications
  • lightening components
  • fan and ventilation
  • filters
  • cooking pans
  • goblets
  • plate and more.

Advantages
Spinning is particularly convenient for small series production, where axial symmetrical items with Ra 0,3 surface finishing have to be obtained from different materials in different thicknesses. Aluminum, copper, silver, steel and stainless steel can be conveniently processed but wall thickness starting from 0,4 mm up to the limit of the machine type in use. Advantages of spinning versus drawing on a press are:
  • high flexibility for small and medium size production lots
  • quick delivery and low manufacturing tooling costs
  • fast re-tooling and production startup

MDM machines
Mario Di Maio Spa (UCIMU member and ISO 9001 certified company) do include spinning lathes in its own production range since a long time, but a family of automatic machines being recently added new models:

All machines are CNC controlled, offering two programming options: direct or playback. The first one allowing the best possible process for thin blanks and high productivity, but the second offering the definite operator-friendly use of the machine typical of a self teaching option.Tele Service and Tele Programming via Internet are possible for these machine.

When planning an investment for a TLA lathe you not only have to evaluate the economic aspects but the chance to obtain difficult shapes, deep drawn and large items. TLA lathes are standard equipped in order to obtain full spinning and finishing working cycles. A further range of semi automatic TL lathes is available.

The TLA Dimaika automatic spinning lathes are state of the art machines especially designed for flu forming of sheet metal, steel, stainless steel, copper, silver and more blanks but obtain deep drawn items.

The electro welded structure is made of quality steel plates and annealed before machining for maximum strength and rigidity. These machines are equipped with a multi axis 32 KByte memory CNC control for the easy programming of the different working steps. The memory has a capacity up to 1000 spinning programs that can be easily recalled when need.

Depending on the machine type, different features like variable spindle speed up to 2200 RPM, quick electronic controlled spindle stop or trough-spindle-blower for part ejection, are available.

The tailstock height of 400, 550 or 750 allows spinning of respectively 800, 1100 and 1500 mm diameter blanks. The spindle-to-tailstock distance is 825 mm (TLA400), 1150 mm (TLA550) and 1600 mm (TLA750), but the tailstock stroke being of 450 mm. All spinning tool (forming roll, finishing roll and more) are located on a four positions power revolving turret-holder mounted on a orthogonal slide that moves along the longitudinal (X) and transversal (Y) axis of the lathe.

When choosing "automatic spinning" the hydraulically operated slide movement is CNC controlled by mean of proportional valves. In "semiautomatic spinning" option the slide is controlled directly by the operator with a joystick located on the slide. All following equipments are as a standard on our machines: blank centering device, blank holder, hydro-pneumatic rimer, hydro-pneumatic trimmer, all of them with adjustable stroke, power and speed.

All programming and monitoring operations are performed from the synoptic console located on the separate electric board. Our spinning lathes are equipped with interlocked safety devices fulfilling the CE Regulation.

TLA 550 DIMIKA PLUS Spinning lathe
TLA550_memory2
This automatic CNC controlled spinning lathe works with the self-learning work mode : the operator makes the first detail in the manual work mode by means of hydraulic servocontrols, the forming carriage and several ancillary hydraulic units :

- 1 trimming carriage , 2 beading carriages, 1 blank centering device, 1 blank support, 1 knockout, 1 blank holding device

When the first detail is finished, the operator switches over the lathe in the automatic work mode and the machine carries out all the operations already made with the manual work mode. It is possible to store the work process data in a floppy disc. The lathe mandrel is operated by means of a 18,5 kW power motor, which is equipped with an electronic digital inverter for the adjustment from 0 up to the max. speed and a cooling fan.
The forming carriage is equipped with an hydraulic 8 kW motor for the longitudinal stroke, an hydraulic cylinder for the transversal stroke and two proportional valves with position devices for the control of the axis. On the forming carriage there is a three-positions hydraulic turret, suitable for three work rolls. The forming carriage and the ancillary units are fed by a big-sized 200 liters-capacity hydraulic unit, equipped with a 15 kW electric motor and an heat exchanger for oil cooling.
The forming carriage and the tailstock are placed on a slide that moves backward and allows the passage of a blank with diameter from 700 up to 1100 mm, yet maintaining the compactness of the machine . The machine is equipped with automatic lubricating circuits for the mandrel head and the guides of the forming carriage.
The console table has a wide control display and touch-screen type controls. A rotating electrical hoist is placed on the mandrel head in order to ease the assembly of the heavier forms on the lathe.
